Defining Characteristics

Infant

■ Constipation ■ Frequent crying ■ Frequently seeks to suckle at breast ■ Prolonged breastfeeding time ■ Refuses to suckle at breast
■ Suckling time at breast appears unsatisfactory ■ Voids small amounts of concentrated urine ■ Weight gain <500 g in a month

Mother

■ Absence of milk production with nipple stimulation ■ Delay in milk production
■ Expresses breast milk less than prescribed volume
